Encouraging Students to Take Action

High school students in Matt Colley's social studies class work in small groups to synthesize research they've done on a contemporary issue, and begin to make a plan about how and where they can make change. Class begins with students working individually on a tree diagram to process their research. Next, students gather in small groups to share their thinking and create a group poster. By the end of class, groups begin thinking of a plan to address their problems. The lesson is part of a larger unit on social justice movements.
