Lincoln Project co-founder and MSNBC contributor Steve Schmidt weighed in on former President Donald Trump's weekend rally and the behavior of the Biden opposition in an interview Monday with MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell. Schmidt, formerly a Republican strategist for John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, likened the Trump rally to a George Wallace rally and asked if Trump "crazies" are prepared to lock up and kill political opponents. "Is it fair to look at it and say that this is the legacy of, this is the descendant of a George Wallace rally. Is this the descendant of a Bull Connor rally? I think it is fair to say that in substantial measure. Is it an extremist movement? Does it have fascistic markers? Is it appropriate to say it's fascist, that it's an autocratic movement? I think it is," Schmidt said. "You saw one woman up there amongst the group of crazies talking about locking up election workers. Who else would they lock up? And for how long? And where would they send them? Are they prepared to execute political opponents when you look at the totality of the rhetoric? The intimations of violence," he said. "What is this that we're looking at?" Schmidt asked. "What I think it is is a very dangerous extremist movement that has come to life. That can have its roots connected to the Bund [rally] in Madison Square Garden in 1938. But it is hostile to democracy."
