Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has been widely condemned for her recent vote abstention. Omar abstained from a nearly unanimous House vote officially recognizing the Armenian genocide. Omar argued that the resolution was a political statement designed to condemn Turkey, which denies the genocide. "Accountability and recognition of genocide should not be used as a cudgel in a political fight." She added that the resolution should've recognized other human-rights violations. Omar's move provoked bipartisan condemnation and accusations of hypocrisy. That includes from some members of Minnesota's Armenian community. Omar has been under fire for anti-semitic remarks. She is also the subject of tabloid fodder for rumors of an affair with a staffer.
