Explosion at the Center of the Galaxy in Animation

Scientists think an explosion of energy burst “like a lighthouse beam” from the black hole at the center of the Milky Way 3.5 million years ago. This explosion may be responsible for the bands of irradiated gas seen in our cosmic neighbor, the Magellanic Stream. Credit: James Josephides/ASTRO 3D
