Trump vs. Dem Whip Steny Hoyer on Immigration Reform: "Comprehensive Means Comprehensive"

At one point during Tuesday's bipartisan discussion on immigration reform, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer challenged the president's plan to make a deal on border security, chain migration, the visa lottery, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals [DACA] without doing fully "comprehensive" immigration reform. <BLOCKQUOTE>REP. STENY HOYER: Mr. President... We need to take care of these DACA kids and we all agree about that. 86% of the American public agrees on that. With all due respect... there are some things you are proposing that are going to be very controversial, that will be an impediment to an agreement. DONALD TRUMP: But you're going to negotiate those things. You're going to sit down and say, 'we can't agree here, we'll give you half, we're gonna--' You're going to negotiate those things. HOYER: Mr. President, comprehensive means comprehensive. TRUMP: No, we're not talking about comprehensive, now we're talking about DACA. HOYER: We are talking about comprehensive. TRUMP: If you wanna go there, it is okay, because you're not that far away. HOYER: Many of the things that are mentioned ought to be a part of the negotiations regarding comprehensive immigration reform. TRUMP: If you want to take it a step further, go ahead. You may complicate it. And you may delay DACA in some way. SEN. DICK DURBIN: I don't want to do that. You said at the beginning we need to phase this... We have a deadline looming, we have a lot of lives hanging. We can agree on some very fundamental things together on border security. On the future of diversity visas. Comprehensive though, I worked on it for six months... it took us six months to put it together. We don't have six months for the DACA. TRUMP: You're going to negotiate. Maybe we'll agree, maybe we won't. It’s possible we are not going to agree, and it is possible we are. There should be no reason for us not to get this done. I will say when this group comes back hopefully with an agreement, this group and others from the Senate and the House come back with an agreement, I'm signing it. I will be signing it. I'm not going to say i want this, or I want that. I'm going to be signing it.
