There's a Better Way

Albuquerque, NM is inspiring an innovative solution to panhandling and the crisis of homelessness – and cities are paying attention nationwide. While passing a man who was homeless and panhandling one day, Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry had the idea of bringing work directly to those in need on the streets. There’s a Better Way, in partnership with St. Martin’s Hospitality Center, now brings work opportunities each morning directly to those on the street and focuses on creating dignity through work. Now the city’s panhandlers are making a positive contribution to the city’s workforce, and through this ‘direct to work’ program those who are experiencing homelessness have created community, self-worth and are now connected to services that support the rebuilding of their lives.
